At the beginning of November we set off on our first Hundereise to our neighbouring country Germany. Today I'm telling you about our wonderful accommodation, our meet-up with Bibi & June at the Donau-Main-Kanal and the afternoon we spent in Nürnberg afterwards.

Why the Nürnberg area?

Bibi, Kevin & June (you know them from the blog post: June moves in! A puppy must never be allowed on the sofa) moved there for work reasons. Of course the Hundereise team had to come and visit.

Our accommodation – the Familie Held apartment

Getting to Mimberg

We were looking for accommodation between Nürnberg and Freystadt that could take 4 dogs plus their humans. We found exactly that in Burgthann – or rather, in Mimberg. The Familie Held apartment turned out to be a real gem! It has everything you need and wins you over with some fantastic extras.

Dog-friendly apartment – generously equipped

With the sat nav we had no trouble finding the address. Frau Held and her granddaughter gave us a warm welcome at the front door and led us down the steps towards the garden, where the entrance to our lovely apartment is.

First we stepped into the well-equipped kitchen, which is truly lacking for nothing. Oil, vinegar and spices are all there, as is a coffee machine complete with capsules. A dishwasher means you don't have to wash up on holiday, and the washing machine stands ready for any dirty laundry.

According to Frau Held the fruit bowl wasn't quite complete, so our attentive host brought us a wonderfully fresh basket the next day, filled with pineapple, bananas and much more. We were spoiled just as you should be on holiday – though it's not always the norm in a self-catering apartment. For a reasonable extra charge, Frau Held even served up a delicious, varied breakfast.

Beyond the kitchen, the corridor leads to a small bathroom with a washbasin and toilet. The large bathroom has a shower, a bathtub, a walk-in wardrobe and even a sauna (available for an additional charge).

The living room, which also opens onto the terrace, offers a dining area, a pull-out sofa, an armchair with footstool and a TV with Netflix access – which we made very good use of in the evenings. The bedroom tempts you in with an extremely comfortable bed.

More highlights in the garden

The terrace holds a wonderful surprise: a jacuzzi, free to use, plus seating and a barbecue grill for the warmer months. Familie Held really goes out of their way to make guests feel completely at home.

We had arranged in advance that the Galgos and Murphy were allowed on the sofa, and we always bring our own blankets for exactly that purpose. When we said goodbye, Frau Held told us she has quite a few guests who come with dogs – but she hadn't heard a peep from us ;)

The Main-Donau-Kanal

Wednesday

Since Tuesday was purely a travel day, we met up with Bibi, Kevin and June on Wednesday morning at the riding stable where they work. Fortunately Bibi had the whole day off, so we all headed together to the Main-Donau-Kanal.

June already knew Murphy, but today she was meeting the long-legged Galgos Atlas, Tiago and Neroli properly for the first time. The three of them behaved impeccably, of course, and so we enjoyed a wonderful outing along the canal in glorious sunshine and blue skies.

The canal stretches an impressive 171 km, so we could have walked forever – and as the name suggests, it connects the Donau with the Main. The construction of this federal waterway between 1960 and 1992 created the Europakanal, a major shipping route linking the North Sea with the Black Sea.

The city of Nürnberg

In the afternoon we all headed into Nürnberg together. Nürnberg is the second-largest city in Bavaria and has just over half a million inhabitants. We strolled through the pedestrian zone while Bibi ran a few quick errands.

At the beginning of November a few Christkindl market stalls had already opened. Since Nürnberg is world-famous for its Lebkuchen, Martina treated us to a packet. We saved them for coffee over the following days and they were absolutely delicious.

Passing St. Lorenz Church, we made our way to the Hauptmarkt and its beautiful fountain. At this corner, Martina was approached by other tourists who asked to take photos with her and the striking Greyhounds. All four of them put on their best photo face :) – and afterwards we sat down for something hearty at Spießgesellen.

We'll show you our longest hiking route together around Burgthann, plus autumnal photos from the Rothsee and the Schwarzachklamm, in this blog post.

I was neither asked nor paid to write this. The stay was simply so relaxing and dog-friendly that I didn't want to keep it to myself — other dog owners deserve to know about it. ***
