Last autumn we were drawn to southern Burgenland for a second time, to the area around Rechnitz. The Weinloft from our last Hundereise is only suited for a couple, and since our friends Nina and Dave were joining us this time, we looked for a larger place to stay – and found one.

The Kellerstöckl Rosalie near Rechnitz

The Kellerstöckl Rosalie sits on the eastern edge of Rechnitz, right on the sunny southern slopes of the Günsergebirge. It's ideally suited for 2 to 7 people. The landlords, Lena and Andreas, are wonderfully attentive and genuinely dog-friendly – they have a beloved four-legged companion of their own.

They reply to our enquiry from their own holiday and arrange for their uncle to hand over the key. On the second evening they even bring us firewood and tip us off to walk around the Badestausee in Rechnitz.

You can tell right away that dogs are truly welcome here. The fenced front garden, which is even directly accessible from the balcony for the dogs, is wonderfully practical and convenient. The Kellerstöckl Rosalie is also nicely located close to one or two Buschenschanken.

The accommodation is well equipped and all the important amenities are there. One bedroom is on the ground floor, which we take. Since the dogs like to sleep near us and the stairs are quite steep, Nina and Dave choose one of the bedrooms on the first floor. The kitchen has everything you could need. The living room has a dining table with a generous seating area, a sofa, a television, and a wood-burning stove.

The Wine Trail near Rechnitz

A lovely introductory walk is the wine trail. We park near the Vinothek Reichermühle and follow the signposts. At just 1.5 kilometres, it's the perfect start for a sunny autumn stroll. The municipality of Rechnitz and the nature park association have placed several information boards along the way, so you learn plenty of interesting facts about viticulture and local history.

The Weingebirge near Rechnitz

Right from our Kellerstöckl you can immerse yourself in the quintessential southern Burgenland landscape. The federal state with the most sunny days shows itself at its very best, spreading a golden autumn out before us.

The harvest is abundant on the traditional meadow orchards, and the old fruit trees lend the region a timeless character. The leaves of the neighbouring grapevines shimmer in the autumn sun and climb their way up many an old Kellerstöckl.

All of us – Nina, Dave, my favourite person, Archie, Murphy and I – soak up the glorious peace and the warm sunshine in the romantic surroundings of the Weingebirge.

The Journey Home with a Stop at Kirchschlag Castle Ruins, Lower Austria

On the way home, my favourite person, the two Frenchies and I still have one more excursion destination in Lower Austria on the agenda. So instead of taking the route via Oberwart, we cross the Geschriebenstein and stop off in Kirchschlag.

Before we can explore the historic walls, the four of us need around 15 minutes to climb up to the 12th-century castle ruins. While Archie and I need a little breather at the top, we enjoy the view over the gentle hills of the Bucklige Welt. Once we've wrapped up this short stop at the Kirchschlag castle ruins, we take on the final leg of the journey home in a relaxed mood. It's not far, after all ;)

The stay was wonderfully relaxing and dog-friendly, so I didn't want to keep it to myself. Hence: unpaid advertising ;) ***
