This time Murphy, Archie, my favourite man and I are heading to southern Burgenland for the very first time. My in-laws tipped us off about the Kellerstöckl, and that was enough to spark our curiosity. We searched and found the charming Weinloft am Radlingberg.

In their origins, Kellerstöckl are agricultural buildings. They are mostly found in wine-growing areas — and in this particular form especially in southern Burgenland and eastern Styria. The cellar was dug deep into the hillside and used both for storing equipment and for making wine.

Above it sat a room that served as a rest area or even a place to sleep for the vineyard workers. Under the roof, food was dried and stored. Many Kellerstöckl have since been converted into holiday flats and small apartments.

Welcome to Weinloft 1

Radlingberg belongs to the "Weinidylle" region of southern Burgenland. The little village is wonderfully secluded and quiet, so that the moment you arrive, you can feel yourself starting to unwind.

There are 3 Kellerstöckl in the neighbourhood available to rent, and around 5 houses are permanently occupied. The remaining Kellerstöckl are still owned by their original owners or have been bought by someone. The neighbour, with her chickens, geese, cats and a dog, gives us a very warm welcome.

We leave the car down by the road and walk up a gentle slope to the romantic Weinloft 1. I am simply delighted. Vines and nature as far as the eye can see. Behind the Weinstöckl, two sun loungers, a hammock and a partly covered seating area invite you to linger.

Facilities and furnishings in the Kellerstöckl

We step into the Weinloft and are greeted by a blend of cosiness and chic. Across 35 m² we find everything we need for a long weekend. You can tell that every detail has been put together with love.

In the kitchen there is a two-ring hob, a generous fridge, a mini oven and a Nespresso machine. The basic cooking essentials are of course all there.

The four-poster bed is genuinely heavenly comfortable. We have rarely slept so well on holiday.
We unfortunately didn't use the infrared sauna in the bedroom — but we will next time we come!

We all feel especially at home in the living room. Breakfast and dinner are taken at the repurposed door-turned-table, and the cosiness kicks in with the warmth of the fire.

Supplies for the wood-burning stove (= wood) or indeed for the throat (= wine) are down in the cellar, by the way. ;)

The hosts

Martina Fank and Ronald Kantauer rent out 3 unique Weinlofts in this area. We got to know the lovely couple and, since they are dog lovers themselves, there was plenty to talk about.

They are attentive from the start and always reachable if you have questions. In the wine cellar, Martina and Ronald have put together plenty of information about hiking trails and local attractions. A tablet in the Weinloft reveals many more tips for the surrounding area.

On this holiday, we fell head over heels for the open fire. The cosy warmth that spreads through the Kellerstöckl in the evenings does the soul a world of good.

Autumn in southern Burgenland becomes wonderfully cosy like this.

As mentioned above, we are in the Weinidylle in southern Burgenland — more precisely, in the nature park. There are several hiking trails to explore here. For us, the simple walk around our Kellerstöckl was more than enough, with its breathtaking landscape, the stillness, the nature and the scents.

See for yourselves! This time there are also some black-and-white shots. Very atmospheric, we think.

The vines blend harmoniously with the rolling hills and let the autumn sun do its work. Also characteristic are the traditional orchards that we keep coming across.

*** The review of the accommodation is a purely personal assessment and perception.

I was not asked and not paid to write this. The stay was simply very relaxing and dog-friendly, so I didn't want to keep it from other dog owners. ***

In this post I tell you about our day trips in the area.
